The ones who stay in the hometown do indeed pay a price, and part of that price is often burning resentment at the ones who took off for the hinterlands. Sorry.

Just be grateful that you only have to povide tech support for your parents computers while on vacation. SOME of your family members are more proximal and have to provide support on a pretty regular basis.

This in spite of detailed, step-by-step instruction for such daunting tasks as burning music onto CDs.

And I go to LOL cat websites pretty regularly and have not ONCE seen one of your cats.

@Elliot:

>dude, you seem to be (deliberately?) missing the rather obvious point
>that everything on visa's list is (and has to be) something you *pay*
>for, probably in a place/amount where you'd be likely to use a credit
>card rather than cash. "our" list is (and probably has to be) stuff
>you *achieve*.

Well, yeah, there is that.

I guess maybe I feel that in many ways that's a defining characteristic- accomplishment and competence vs. pay-for-privilege. Maybe I need to update the article :-)

As for the number of them who are nonplussed by the Visa list, I'm sure there are many, but when I'm trying to establish some polarization for my own amusement, I have to gloss over that!

Thanks for reading!

dude, you seem to be (deliberately?) missing the rather obvious point that everything on visa's list is (and has to be) something you pay for, probably in a place/amount where you'd be likely to use a credit card rather than cash. our list is (and probably has to be) stuff you achieve.

i'm sure there are some of them who'd agree with visa because they've little imagination/ambition and don't distinguish amusement from gratification. but i'm also sure there are plenty of them who'd be equally unimpressed with visa's list or find, after trying all the items, that they were strangely unfulfilled because none of it involved any achievement or skill.

("21. train like an astronaut" looks like an odd one out, but i don't think it is. i don't think the implication's that you do this in your yard so much as at an expensive gym or, better yet, at a special facility. you're not going to pay Virgin Galactic's 200kUSD or whatever it is in cash, are you?)
